Softball Splits Afternoon Doubleheader Against Boston University

The Lead: Senior tri-captain Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.) went 3-4 with three singles and crossed home once as Holy Cross defeated Boston University by a final of 6-3 in the first game of the doubleheader, while the Terriers took game two with a score of 9-1 in Patriot League softball action on Saturday afternoon at Freshman Field. 

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Back-to-back singles by junior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) kicked things off for the Crusaders in the top of the first, but were unable to capitalize. 
  • Boston University took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Gabi Martinez to centerfield that allowed Emma Wong to score the first Terrier run. 
  • Beginning the top of the second with a single to third base by Lang, the Crusaders were able to capitalize on an error committed by the Terriers as Lang advanced to third and scored the first Crusader run as she was brought in by junior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) with the score tied 1-1. 
  • After Holy Cross evened the score, Boston University took its second lead of the game at 2-1 in the bottom of the second on a single to right field by Kendra Meadows that brought in Mandy Fernandez. 
  • The Crusaders tacked on five more runs over the fourth and fifth frames.
  • Freshman Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) rocketed a double to left center that allowed Lang to score the first run of the fourth inning. McCarthy advanced to third on a single by freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) and crossed home plate for the for the third Holy Cross run as Mullen was thrown out at third. 
  • Holy Cross added three more runs in the top of the fifth frame on a double by sophomore Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) that scored both Jarvis and sophomore Kylee Malouf (Simi Valley, Calif.), while Lang brought scored Krisanda as she whacked a single to left field to bring the score to 6-1. 
  • Durham had silenced the Terrier bats for two innings before Fernandez sent a single to centerfield that scored Emily Younan, cutting the lead in half at 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • In the top of the sixth, Melanie Russell relieved Akers and did not allow a hit. 
  • Boston University went down in order on three straight pop ups as Holy Cross sealed the 6-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Holy Cross outhit Boston University 10-8 through seven innings. 
  • Durham earned her first victory of the season (1-4) as she tossed a solid seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while walking one batter and whiffing four. 
  • Boston University starter Makinna Akers (3-4) took the loss, having pitched five innings and allowed six runs of nine hits, striking out four and walking one. Melanie Russell came in for relief, pitching two innings and allowed one hit and no runs, while striking out two and walking one. 

 

GAME 2 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Moss, who singled to begin the inning, advanced all the way from second on a double from the bat of Jarvis to give the Crusaders to quick 1-0 lead to begin game two. 
  • The second and third inning proved to be busy for Boston University as the Terriers tacked on nine runs. 
  • A six-run second inning began on a walk to Lauren Hynes and a single by Martinez. Hynes scored the first run of the inning on a single by Jilee Schanda as Durham was relieved by Cheske. 
  • With the bases loaded, the Terriers capitalized on a single by Moriah Connolly, a double rocketed to left center by Younan, a wild pitch and a double steal by Fernandez and Younan that allowed Boston University to take the 6-1 advantage.
  • To begin the third, Schanda whacked a double to center field that allowed Felbaum to advance to third. Felbaum was then able to capitalize on a fielding error by the Crusaders and scored. Back-to-back singles by Connolly and Wong brought in both Schanda and Wong to tack on two more runs in the inning. 
  • Russell silenced the Crusader bats through five innings as the Crusaders went down in order in the top of the fifth, sealing Boston University 9-1 victory in game two. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Boston University out hit Holy Cross 10-8 through five innings. 
  • Durham pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits. Taking the loss was Cheske (0-2), who tossed 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out three. Freshman Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) appeared in one inning of relief and allowed one hit. 
  • Russel (1-4) earned the victory as she tossed five innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out six batters and walking three. 

UP NEXT 

  • The Crusaders return to the diamond tomorrow, April 5, in the final game of the three-game series versus Boston University at 12:00 p.m. at Freshman Field.
