The Lead: A seven-run third inning for Quinnipiac sealed the deal in game one as the Bobcats took the five-inning victory over Holy Cross by a final of 10-1, as the Crusaders crossed the plate seven times within the fourth inning in game two to take the 9-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field in non-conference softball action.

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nikki Barba got Quinnipiac's offense going as she sent a double into center field and later came around to score on a two-run bomb by Hannah Lindsley as the Bobcats took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) singled up the middle to begin the third inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Junior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) sent a ground ball to the second baseman that allowed Young to plate and cut the Bobcat's lead in half at 2-1.
  • In the bottom half of the third, Quinnipiac got to Durham for eight runs on nine hits that allowed the Bobcats to pull away with the 8-2 lead before she was pulled from the game.
  • Lindsley kick started the bottom half of the third frame with a double to right field and crossed home plate on a single through the left side by Miranda Magana, sending Keilani Finley to second and Jordan Paolucci to third. With the bases loaded full of Bobcats, Abby Johnson sent a two-run RBI single to left center that scored both Paolucci and Finley.
  • Maria Ascher rocketed a double to right center that allowed Magana to come in from third as Holy Cross made the pitching change with freshman pitcher Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) entering the game. Quinnipiac tacked on two more with a ground out to the second baseman by Brittney Cyr and a single by Barba that brought in Johnson and Ascher. Lindsley tacked on her second hit of the inning with a single and advanced to third on an error committed by the Crusader defense and allowed Barba to plate.
  • In the bottom of the fourth frame, Magana whacked her first home run of the season to increase the Bobcats' lead to 10-1.
  • Lindsley shut down the Holy Cross bats through four innings as she was relieved by Casey Herzog in the top of the fifth. The Crusaders went down 1-2-3 as the Bobcats sealed the 10-1 victory in game one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Quinnipiac outhit Holy Cross 12-3 through five innings.
  • Holy Cross left four runners on base, while Quinnipiac left three on base.
  • Bobcats starter Hannah Lindsley earned the victory (4-11) as she tossed a solid four frames and allowed one run on three hits with five punch-outs. Herzog pitched one inning of relief and struck out two.
  • Durham took the loss (2-7) as she pitched 2.1 innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits and struck out two batters. Gonzalez tossed 1.2 innings of relief and surrendered two runs on three hits with two punch-outs.

 

GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Holy Cross got things started early as it gained the 1-0 lead in the top of the second frame. Jarvis singled up the middle to begin the inning and later crossed home on a double to left field from the bat of senior Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.).
  • With one out in the top of the fourth, the Crusaders capitalized on two errors by the Bobcat defense and got to Herzog for five runs before she was chased from the game.
  • Keough singled through the left side and advanced to third on a double by senior tri-captain Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.). Junior Becky Geddes (Cumberland, R.I.) entered the game to pinch hit and hit an infield single to the shortstop. Freshman Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman with the bases loaded that allowed Keough to score.
  • Senior tri-captain Cassie Girvalo (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) then walked in Lang for the third Crusader run of the inning. With the bases still loaded, sophomore Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) sent a two-run single to left field that allowed both McCarthy and Muniz to score, which caused Quinnipiac to make the pitching change from Herzog to Robey.
  • Moss was able to successfully reach first on an infield error by the shortstop that allowed Girvalo to score as Krisanda later came around to score on a fielder's choice by Jarvis.
  • After stealing second, sophomore Kylee Malouf (Simi Valley, Calif.) came all the way home from second as Moss rocketed a double through the left side. On a single up the middle by Young, Moss scored the second Crusader run of the sixth, bringing the score to 9-0.
  • Quinnipiac tacked on its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a double to left center by Ascher that scored Kathryn Vitale with two outs. Watson recorded the final out on a ground ball by Cyr as the Crusaders sealed the 9-1 game two victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Through six innings, Holy Cross outhit Quinnipiac 10-6.
  • The Bobcats left eight runners on base, while Holy Cross left six.
  • Watson recorded the victory (3-3) as she tossed six solid innings and allowed just one earned one on six hits, while she struck out four and walked three.
  • Herzog took the loss (2-5) as she pitched 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Robey pitched 2.2 innings of relief as she gave up two runs on two hits.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders return to the diamond this Saturday-Sunday, April 18-19 as they travel to Colgate for a three-game series with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 12:00.
