HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Costly errors committed by the Holy Cross defense allowed Lehigh to capitalize and score three unearned runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.
  • The Mountain Hawks' three-run first inning kicked off with a bunt single by Nicole Yozzo, who later stole second. Jessica Calvini reached on an error committed by the shortstop that allowed Yozzo to score. Cassie Waggy whacked an infield single to third that loaded the bases as Emma Captez then bunt singled to plate Decker. Carissa Zito reached first on a throwing error committed by the third baseman that allowed the third Lehigh run of the inning to cross.
  • In the top of the second inning, the Mountain Hawks tacked on their fourth run on an RBI triple to right field by Lattanzio that scored Decker, who singled to right to begin the frame.
  • Sophomore Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) kicked off the Crusaders' two-run second inning with a single up the middle to center field. With senior Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) up to bat, she was able to rocket a triple over the right fielder's head that rolled around the fence. Krisanda came around from first to score as Keough slid safely into third. Senior tri-captain Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked a single to right field that brought in Keough to cut the lead to 4-2 at the end of two.
  • Lehigh got to Watson for three hits through the next two innings, but were not able to plate a run before she was pulled in the top of the fifth and relieved by freshman pitcher Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.).
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Holy Cross chipped away at Lehigh's lead and came within one run by the score of  4-3.
  • Junior tri-captain Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) walked to begin the inning and later scored on a double to center field rocketed from the bat of junior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass) as Emily Bausher relieved Lehigh starter Christine Campbell.
  • Bausher was able to silence the Crusader bats for the final two innings and did not allow a hit. Holy Cross went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as Lehigh sealed the 4-3 series finale victory.
