Men's Hockey Posts 2-1 Win Versus Bentley

The Lead: Freshman Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) broke a 1-1 tie in the third period with the game-winner for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Bentley, 2-1, on Saturday evening at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena in Atlantic Hockey action in the regular season finale for both teams. The Crusaders will be the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament and will host No. 11 seed Niagara in a best two-out-of-three first round series at the Hart Center on March 6-8. HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 15:32 of the first period when freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) scored a power play goal. Sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) and junior Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) each posted an assist on the goal.    
  • Bentley outshot Holy Cross, 10-8, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play and the Falcons went 0-2.
  • Bentley tied the contest at 1-1 at 14:48 of the second period when Andrew Gladiuk scored on a breakaway for his 19th goal of the season.
  • The Falcons outshot the Crusaders, 11-7, while Bentley went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
  • Pooley gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead at 4:10 of the third period when he tipped a shot by Moore past Bentley goalie Jayson Argue. Barrett also tallied an assist on the goal.
  • With just 40 seconds left in the third period, Bentley went with an empty-net but were unable to score the equalizer for the 2-1 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bentley outshot Holy Cross, 33-27.
  • The Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play, while the Falcons went 0-4.
  • Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) recorded 32 saves, while Argue posted 25 saves for Bentley.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Crusaders are 2-2-0 versus Bentley this year.
  • Moore and Pooley lead the team with 10 goals and are each tied for 10th most goals for a rookie in the Division I history of the program.
  • Pooley now has two game-winning goals this season.
  • McNamara now has 30 career assists which are the eighth most by a defenseman on the program's Division I list.
  • Barrett leads the team with 16 assists and 23 points.

  • The Crusaders return to action on Friday, March 6, when they host Niagara in game one of a best two-out-of-three Atlantic Hockey Tournament first round series.
