THE LEAD: Junior Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Bentley 2-1 on Saturday night. The Crusaders are now 9-3-1 in AHC action. With the win, the Crusaders remain tied for first place with Robert Morris with 19 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 9:56 of the first period, with Bentley on the power play, Max French took a wrist shot from the left circle that hit the crossbar.
- At 14:59 of the first, French received a pass in the slot and ripped a shot, yet sophomore Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) made a beautiful glove save, keeping the game tied at 0-0.
- Bentley outshot the Crusaders 13-7 in the first period, while each team went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
- With 1:45 remaining in the second period, Billy Eiserman sent a slap shot from the blue line, which found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Bentley.
- The Falcons outshot the Crusaders 15-10 while each team went 0-1 on the power play.
- At 15:20 of the third period, sophomore Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) wristed a shot on goal from the left circle, which found room above Gabe Antoni's blocker side, making the score 1-1. Senior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded an assist on the goal.
- With 1:44 remaining in the third period, sophomore Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) ripped shot from the slot, which was saved by Antoni keeping the score knotted at 1-1.
- Neither team was able to score in the final minutes, as overtime began.
- With 3:51 remaining in overtime, sophomore Tommy Muratore (Mendham, N.J.) sent a shot from the left point, and the rebound bounced out to Barrett who sent a wrist shot from the slot, beating Antoni five-hole and giving the Crusaders the 2-1 victory in overtime. Lopez recorded an assist on the goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bentley outshot Holy Cross 33-30 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 32 saves, to earn the win and is now 9-4-1 on the season, while Antoni tallied 28 saves.
- Holy Cross went 0-4 on the power play, while Bentley went 0-2
- Holy Cross won 37 face-offs, while Bentley won 29.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Crusaders are now on a seven-game unbeaten streak. The Crusaders are also 10-2-1 in their last 13 games, outscoring their opposition 47-29.
- The win at Bentley keeps the Crusaders tied for first place in the AHC standings with Robert Morris with 19 points.
- Pooley has now scored in five straight games.
- Barrett's goal is his team-leading 10th of the season and his first game-winner of the year, and the fourth of his career.
