WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior strong safety Matt Bhaya, senior cornerback Coan Calabrese, junior free safety Luke Ford and junior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek have been selected to the 2015 Academic All-Patriot League team for football, as announced by the conference office. The Crusaders' four selections to the team were the most in the conference, with no other school having more than two players selected. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, and be a starter or key reserve.
Bhaya was previously named to the Patriot League All-Academic team in 2014, and was also selected second team All-Patriot League and CoSIDA Academic All-District this season. He started all 11 games for the Crusaders this season at strong safety and ranked second on the team with 69 total tackles, while tying for the team lead with two fumble recoveries. Bhaya also tied for second on the squad with two interceptions and four pass breakups. He finished the year ranked fourth in the Patriot League in fumble recoveries, 15th in passes defended and 17th in total tackles. During his Holy Cross career, Bhaya totaled 188 tackles, with 163 solo stops, three tackles for loss, four interceptions, 17 pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. In the classroom, Bhaya carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 with a major in economics.
Calabrese played in nine games on the season at cornerback, starting eight times. He totaled 23 tackles on the year, while leading the team with five pass breakups and tying for second on the team with two interceptions. Calabrese finished the year ranked eighth in the Patriot League in both interceptions and passes defended. Over the course of his collegiate career, he recorded 40 tackles, one tackle for loss, three interceptions and six pass breakups. In the classroom, Calabrese owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.77 with a major in economics.
Ford started all 11 games this season at free safety, and ranked fifth on the team with 43 total tackles, including 38 solo stops and two tackles for loss. He led the team with three interceptions, while tying for second on the squad with four pass breakups. Ford finished the season ranked fourth in the Patriot League in interceptions, 11th in passes defended and 47th in total tackles. During his Holy Cross career, he has now totaled 78 tackles, one sack and four tackles for loss, five interceptions and seven pass breakups. In the classroom, Ford carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.57 with a major in economics.
Wieczorek makes his second-straight appearance on the Patriot League All-Academic team, after previously being honored in 2014. Also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, he played in nine games at wide receiver this season, starting eight times. Wieczorek ranked third on the team with 31 receptions for 415 yards and four touchdowns, including 18 catches for 239 yards and two scores against conference foes. He finished the season ranked eighth in the Patriot League in receiving yards and 10th in receptions. Over the course of his collegiate career, Wieczorek now has 93 receptions for 1,324 yards and 11 touchdowns, while totaling 1,809 career all-purpose yards. In the classroom, he owns a 3.86 cumulative grade point average with a major in economics.
Holy Cross concluded the 2015 season with an overall record of 6-5, and placed fourth in the Patriot League with a 3-3 mark in conference games. The Crusaders finished with a winning record for the eighth time in Tom Gilmore's 12 years as head coach.
