THE LEAD: Freshman forward Michael Laffin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), sophomore forward Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) and sophomore forward T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) each scored a goal for the Crusaders, while sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) made 28 saves as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Air Force, 3-1, on Thursday evening at the Cadet Ice Arena in Atlantic Hockey action. The Crusaders have won four of their last five games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead with just 25 seconds left in the first period when Laffin tipped in a shot by sophomore forward Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.). Senior defenseman Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) also posted an assist on the goal as he wrapped the puck around the boards from the blue line to Pooley.
- Each team took 11 shots for the first period, while the Falcons went 0-1 on the power play.
- Berrafato made a nice glove save at 2:24 of the second period as Dylan Abood skated to the net and blasted a shot, but Berrafato was able to make the save.
- At 13:20 of the second period, sophomore forward Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) stole the puck at center ice and went on a breakaway, but Air Force goalie Shane Starrett made the save.
- With just 18 seconds left in the second period, Bolton blasted a shot from the blue line that was saved by Starrett, but Ferrill pounced on the rebound and then found the back of the net. Mulcahy also tallied an assist on the goal.
- The Falcons outshot the Crusaders, 8-4, while each team went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
- The Crusaders took a 3-0 lead at 9:57 of the third period, when Moore fired a wrist shot glove side to the upper corner of the net. Junior forward Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) and sophomore forward Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) tallied assists on the goal.
- Air Force found the back of the net when Kyle Haak scored a short-handed goal at 18:17.
- The Falcons then went with an empty net but the Crusaders were able to keep the Falcons from scoring for the 3-1 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 29-24 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 28 saves, while Starrett recorded 21 saves.
- Holy Cross went 0-4 on the power play, while Air Force went 0-3.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Crusaders have now won four of their last five games and have outscored the opposition by a 20-11 margin over this span.
- Laffin now has four goals this season. He at least one point in five of the last six games.
- Ferrill netted his third goal of the season. He has at least one point in five straight games. Ferrill now has two career game-winning goals.
- Moore now has three goals this season.
