Volleyball Defeats Navy, 3-2, In Home Opener

  • The Lead: Freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.), junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.), and junior Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) all registered double-doubles as the Crusaders edged Navy in their home opener at the Hart Center by scores of 16-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-22 and 15-10 on Friday night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Petersen registered a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Sifferlen registered her double-double with 22 kills and 12 digs. McKernan registered a double-double with 22 assists and 13 digs.
  • Sifferlen led Holy Cross with 22 kills, while McKernan had a team-leading 22 assists.
  • Sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) led the Crusaders with 22 digs.
  • Sophomore Mary Mullen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) led Holy Cross with nine block assists.
  • Olivia Kluger led Navy with 13 kills, while Patricia Mattingly led with 35 assists and Sydney Shearn led with 19 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen's double-double was her fourth of the season, and 14th of her career.
  • McKernan's double-double was her fourth this season and 24th of her career, while Petersen's was her fifth of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Navy started the match with a strong showing in the first set, with multiple scoring streaks, including a 7-0 run, the Midshipmen won by a score of 25-16.
  • With an 18-17 lead, the Crusaders put together a 7-1 scoring run to take the second set and tie up the match.
  • The Midshipmen came back with another strong showing in the third set, which included a 13-3 scoring run that would give them the set victory.
  • Holy Cross began the fourth set with a 12-6 run to give them a commanding lead. Navy brought the set score back to just a three point lead, but were unable to regain the lead, as the Crusaders won 25-22.
  • With Navy holding a 10-8 lead in the fifth set, the Crusaders surged with seven straight points to take the match, winning the final set 15-10.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Lafayette in Patriot League action at the Hart Center, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
