Women?s Cross Country Places Fourth At Patriot League Championship

The Lead: Junior Mary Welsh (Manhasset, N.Y.) placed eighth and sophomore Hannah Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was ninth as the Crusaders finished fourth out of 10 teams at the Patriot League Championship. The Crusaders' fourth place finish is their best in 14 years when they tied for third in 2001. Bucknell won the championship with 34 points, followed by Navy (51 points), Boston University (104 points), Holy Cross (109 points), Army West Point (125 points), American (174 points), Lehigh (176 points), Loyola (Md.) (195 points), Lafayette (243 points) and Colgate (251 points).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Welsh finished eighth out of 109 runners with a time of 21:54.3, while Jeter was ninth with a time of 21:55.5.
  • Junior Rachel Sowinski (Mountain Top, Pa.) was 26th with a time of 22:30.5, while sophomore Annie Sullivan (Southborough, Mass.) was 32nd with a time of 22:47.0 and junior Kirsty Gargiulo (Summit, N.J.) finished 34th with a time of 22:57.5.
  • Navy's Kelley Robinson won the championship with a time of 21:14.0.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

  • The Crusaders' fourth place finish is their best in 14 years at the Patriot League Championship when they tied for third in 2001.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders are back in action on Friday, Nov. 13 when they compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional in Boston at 10:00 a.m.

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • This was the first ever women's cross country meet in the Turnpike Trophy competition.
  • Boston University earned the point by placing in front of the Crusaders as the Terriers were third and Holy Cross was fourth.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school that accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • Boston University holds a 5-0 lead in the season series after the Terriers also won in field hockey (Oct. 9), women's soccer (Oct. 21), men's soccer (Oct. 28) and men's cross country (Oct. 31).
