Men?s Hockey Earns 4-1 Victory Over Canisius

  • The Lead: The Crusaders scored three times in the first period to propel them to a 4-1 victory over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman Michael Laffin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) got the Crusaders on the board just 2:29 into the game.
  • Sophomore T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead with a power play goal at 14:17 of the first.
  • The Crusaders took a commanding 3-0 lead when Sophomore Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) scored at the 18:52 mark of the first period.
  • Holy Cross outshot Canisius 13-6 in the first period. The Crusaders were 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins did not have any man advantages in the first.
  • Sophomore Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) gave Holy Cross a 4-0 at 3:42 of the second period.
  • Ian Edmondson got the Golden Griffins on the board at the 11:35 mark of the second period.
  • Holy Cross outshot Canisius 13-5 in the second period. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play in the period.
  • Canisius nearly came up with a second goal eight minutes into the third, but freshman netminder Tommy Nixon (Sherwood Park, Alberta) came up with a few big saves as the Golden Griffins began to press.
  • Ferrill got a breakaway opportunity 11 minutes into the third period, but was stopped low on the glove side by Simon Hofley.
  • Canisius outshot Holy Cross 14-9 in the third period. The Crusaders were 0-for-1 on the man advantage, while the Golden Griffins did not have a power play in the third.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Nixon made 24 saves and allowed one goal to earn his first collegiate win for the Crusaders.
  • Reilly Turner made 10 saves and allowed three goals for the Golden Griffins in the first 20 minutes of the game, while Hofley stopped 21 shots and allowed one goal in the remaining 40.
  • Laffin led the Crusaders in scoring with three points (1g,2a), while Lopez also had a multi-point night with a goal and an assist.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins 35-25.
  • Canisius had the edge in the faceoff circle, taking 33 draws while Holy Cross won 29.
  • The Crusaders were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins were 0-for-1.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Senior defenseman Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) notched his 40th career point, which is seventh-best among Crusaders defensemen in the Division I era, and 30th career assist, which is now tied for ninth-best among Crusaders defenders in the DI era.
  • Laffin now has five points in as many games this season, and scored a goal in both games against Canisius this weekend.

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they travel to Providence, R.I. where they will take on Brown at 7:30 p.m.
