The Lead: Junior Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) found the back of the net for the fifth-straight game, but the Crusaders fell to Canisius, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo, N.Y. The Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins by a 38-18 margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Dylan McLaughlin nearly put the Golden Griffins up 1-0 about six minutes in on a breakaway, but sophomore netminder Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) stopped him with the glove.
- The Crusaders got on the board first at 11:45 of the period as Barrett skated into the zone on the power play and beat goaltender Reilly Turner.
- Holy Cross outshot Canisius 12-6 in the first period. Each team had one power play, the Crusaders scored with the man advantage while the Golden Griffins were unable to convert.
- Canisius got on the board at the 14:07 mark of the second period as Daniel Lafontaine found his way past Berrafato.
- The Crusaders responded quickly on the power play at 15:56 in the second period, as senior defenseman Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) took a shot from the blue line and freshman forward Michael Laffin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tapped in the rebound.
- At 16:50 of the second period, the Golden Griffins went on their second power play of the night, when Shane Conacher capitalized and tied the game up.
- The Crusaders outshot Canisius 13-5 in the second period. Holy Cross was 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins were 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
- The Golden Griffins took their first lead of the night with a tally from Ryan Schmelzer on a rebound at 9:19 of the third period.
- Holy Cross tied the game back up as sophomore Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) found the back of the net at 14:17 of the third period.
- Canisius rebounded with a quick response as Conacher notched his second of the game on the rush with under a minute later.
- The Crusaders pulled Berrafato with just over a minute to play, but were unable to find the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Berrafato made 14 saves and allowed four goals in the loss.
- Turner made 35 stops and allowed three goals to earn the win.
- The Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins 38-18.
- Canisius had the edge in the faceoff circle, winning 33 draws while Holy Cross had 30.
- The Crusaders were 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins were 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Barrett is the first Crusader to score a goal in each of the team's first four games of the season since Dale Reinhardt in the 2006-2007 season. He is also now on an eight-game point streak, and has scored in his last five games.
- Laffin and Mulcahy each tallied their first collegiate goals.
- Bolton now has 39 career points scored, which is now tied for seventh-best by a Crusader defenseman in the Division I era. McNamara earned his 38th career point, which is tied for 10th-best by a Crusader defenseman in the DI era.
- Freshman defenseman Johnny Coughlin (Fairport, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate point with an assist on Mulcahy's goal.
