The Lead: Ralph Cuddemi broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winner for the Golden Griffins with 2:31 left in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Canisius, 2-1, on Saturday evening at HARBORCENTER in Atlantic Hockey action. Canisius took the two-game series as the Golden Griffins won by a 2-1 score in overtime on Friday. The Crusaders are now 8-8-5 and 7-3-5 in Atlantic Hockey. The Crusaders are in second place in the AHC standings with 19 points as No. 20 Roberto Morris is first with 23 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 4:08 of the first period, Cuddemi scored on the power play off a rebound from a shot by Cody Freeman to give Canisius a 1-0 lead.
- At 9:29, the Crusaders went on back-to-back power plays but were unable to find the back of the net.
- Canisius outshot Holy Cross, 11-8 for the first period, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 1-2.
- The Crusaders killed off a five-minute major to start off the second period to keep the Golden Griffins from adding to their 1-0 lead.
- Freshman Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) tied the game at 1-1 at 17:29 of the second period when he fired a shot past Keegan Asmundson for his fifth goal of the year. Freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) posted an assist on the goal.
- The Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins, 10-7 in the second period, while Canisius went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
- At 5:44 of the third period, Canisius' Matthew Grazen fired a shot that hit the post as the game remained tied at 1-1.
- The Golden Griffins took a 2-1 lead with 2:31 left in the third period when Cuddemi scored off a rebound from a shot taken by Shane Conacher. The goal was Cuddemi's second of the game and the 12th of his career.
- With 1:36 remaining, the Crusaders went with the empty net for the extra skater, but were unable to score the equalizer for the 2-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Canisius outshot Holy Cross, 29-25.
- The Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins went 1-3.
- Freshman goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded 23 saves, while Asmundson posted 24 saves for the Golden Griffins.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Pooley's goal was his fifth of the season.
- Berrafato earned the second star of the game, while Chris Rumble was the third star and Cuddemi was the first star.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17, when they travel to Erie, Pa., to take on Atlantic Hockey opponent Mercyhurst at 7:05 p.m., at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers (10-6-3, 8-3-2 AHC) are tied for third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 18 points.
