THE LEAD: Brady Ferguson and Cody Wydo each recorded two goals for the Colonials as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to first-place Robert Morris, 4-3, on Friday evening at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. These two teams will conclude the two-game series on Saturday in Worcester at 3:05 p.m.

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • At 6:07 of the first period Robert Morris opened the scoring as David Friedmann fed Ferguson on a two-on-one and Ferguson found the back of the net. Daniel Leavens also recorded an assist on the goal.
  • With 21.8 seconds remaining in the first, the Colonials extended their lead as Ferguson tallied his second goal of the night, on a feed from Daniel Leavens, beating freshman goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) on the stick side.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Colonials 11-6 in the first period.
  • At 2:38 of the second period, Holy Cross recorded its first goal as junior Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) found the back of the net on a wrap-around shot. Junior Tim Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) recorded assists on the goal.  
  • At 13:50 the Colonials tallied a shorthanded goal with 0:23 remaining in the Crusaders' power play as Wydo recorded a shorthanded goal on a give-and–go feed from Zac Lynch.
  • At 16:23 of the second period, sophomore Brett McKinnon (Kelowna, British Columbia) sent a shot on goal from the right circle, which found the back of the net. Juniors Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) and Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) recorded assists on the goal.
  • At 18:36 of the second period, the Colonials made it a two-goal game as Lynch sent a pass from the left circle to Wydo, who buried the one-timer from the blue line for the shorthanded goal.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Colonials 14-5 in the second period.
  • At 13:15 of the third period, junior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) moved up the left wing, fired a backhanded shot from the left circle that deflected off the skate of defenseman Chase Golightly. Sommer picked up his own rebound and scored to cut the Colonials lead to 4-3.
  • With 2:44 remaining the Crusaders went on a power play and with 1:25 left Holy Cross pulled its goaltender for the six-on-four advantage. The Crusaders were unable to score the equalizer as the Colonials held on for the 4-3 victory.  
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Holy Cross outshot Robert Morris 12-3 in the third period and 37-14 in the game.
  • Berrafato recorded 10 saves, while Dalton Izyk recorded 34 saves.
  • Holy Cross went 0-3 on the power play, while Robert Morris went 1-4.
  • Holy Cross won 34 face-offs, while Robert Morris won 28.
 BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • McKinnon and Sommer's goals were their fifth of the season respectively.
  • Sommer's goal was the second shorthanded goal of his career.
  • Wydo received the first star of the game, as Ferguson collected the second and Sommer earned the third star.
