Men's Soccer Tallies 4-1 Victory At Sacred Heart

The Lead:
 Junior captain Luke Melody (Mansfield, Conn.), freshman Justin Carfora (Plainview, N.Y.), freshman Brad Ross (Nashville, Tenn.) and freshman Yuji Callahan (Okinawa, Japan) each scored a goal for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-1, on Saturday evening in non-conference action at Campus Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Melody gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when he headed in a crossing pass from junior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.). The assist was Ceron's first collegiate point.
  • Carfora increased Holy Cross' lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute when he scored his team-best second goal of the season. Sophomore Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman Eric Dixon (San Diego, Calif.) each posted an assist.
  • The Pioneers cut the Crusader lead to 2-1 in the 71st minute when Ermir Celaj headed in a deflected cross by Jamal Vinson.
  • Ross netted his first collegiate goal in the 80th minute when he headed in a free kick by Ceron. The assist was Ceron's second of the contest.
  • Just 57 seconds later, Callahan concluded the scoring for the game when he tallied his first collegiate goal as he sent a header to the back of the net. Freshman Arno Rupp (Wolfsberg, Austria) posted an assist.

COACH KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "During the second half we took advantage of our opportunities and were able to get the win," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. "Tonight's victory was a collective effort. Three freshmen scored goals which is fantastic. We played a lot of different players through a rotation. This win shows we can rely on the entire team to get results."  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made three saves to earn the win, while Tucker Hackett tallied two saves
  • The Pioneers held the advantage in total shots (18-11), while the Crusaders led in shots on goal (6-4).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Tonight's win was the Crusaders' second in a row following the 2-1 win versus Quinnipiac on Sept. 17.
  • Four Crusaders each tallied their first collegiate point as Ross and Callahan each netted a goal, while Ceron tallied two assists and Dixon posted one assist.  
  • Carfora scored his first collegiate game-winner.

  • The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when they host Dartmouth at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 7:05 p.m. for the SGA Game of the Week.
