WORCESTER, Mass. – Boston University used five runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead and never looked back as it defeated Holy Cross by a score of 11-1 today from Freshman Field. Sophomore Colleen Ahern (Northbrook, Ill.) posted the only RBI of the game for the Crusaders in the first inning. With the loss, Holy Cross drops to 7-16 on the season and 5-4 in Patriot League action. The Terriers improve to 20-18 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Boston University took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Catcher Amy Exart homered to right center field to bring in two runs. It was her third home run of the season. The Terriers scored the runs off of five hits.
The Crusaders also got on the board in the bottom half of the first as Ahern grounded out to second base but it was enough to get sophomore Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) to cross the plate.
Boston added six more runs in the second, third and fourth innings to increase its lead to 11-1.
The Terriers posted a total of 14 hits compared to the Crusaders' two. Each team had an error in the game.
Sophomore Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) took the loss (3-9) giving up seven runs, eight hits and one strikeout in two full innings from the circle.
Lauren Hynes earned the win (13-13) as she held the Crusaders offense to just two hits in three innings of work. Melanie Russell got her first save of the season as she threw two shutout innings.
Holy Cross will be back on the diamond Tuesday, April 15 in a doubleheader against Brown with the first pitch coming at 3:00 p.m.
