Softball drops series finale against Lafayette on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Lafayette in game three of the weekend series by a final score of 6-4 on Sunday, Apr. 19 at Freshman Field.

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone, 5.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs (two earned), two strikeouts, six walks
  • Lafayette: Sophia Alvarez-Backus, 1.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, two runs (two earned), strikeout, two walks
IN RELIEF:
  • Holy Cross: Bridget Mulkeen (L, 4-6), 2.o innings pitched, three hits allowed, four runs (two earned), strikeout, two walks
  • Lafayette: Parker Rowden (W, 9-17), 5.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two runs (two earned), two strikeouts
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman Emily McCandless socked an RBI-double to right-center field in the bottom of the second inning, scoring junior Emma Pietrzak from first base to make it 1-0.
  • Senior Brooke Ventrelle drove in McCandless on the next at-bat, extending the Crusaders lead to 2-0.
  • Senior Ali Sniegocki advanced sophomore Silje Emery to third on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. Emery would then score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Holy Cross.
  • Lafayette's Kylee Sweet cut Holy Cross' lead to 3-1 after hitting an RBI-double to left-center in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Lafayette drew within a run after Sabina Lehnert drew a throw down to second on a stolen base attempt, allowing Sweet to score and make it 3-2 in the top of the fifth.
  • The Leopards went ahead 4-3 in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Caroline Hall.
  • Freshman Kendll Grady cut the deficit to 6-4 with an RBI-double in the bottom of the seventh.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders will be back in action Tuesday, Apr. 21, traveling to Brown for a doubleheader.
  • First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. followed by game two at 5:00 p.m.
