The Lead: Junior Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winner in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated the Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-1, in Atlantic Hockey action on Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 2,681 at the Gene Polisseni Center. The Crusaders remain undefeated in Atlantic Hockey with a 3-0-3 record. This is the Crusaders' best Atlantic Hockey record after the first six league games since starting 5-0-1 in 2003-2004. The Crusaders win the two-game series as these two teams tied 3-3 on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first period went scoreless as RIT outshot Holy Cross, 15-6, while each team went 0-1 on the power play.
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 9:24 of the second period when junior captain Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.) found the back of the net. Freshman Matt Scarth (Calgary, Alberta) posted an assist on the goal. The goal was Vidal's second of the season.
- But at 16:57, Matt Garbowsky tied the contest at 1-1 with his fifth goal of the year.
- RIT outshot Holy Cross, 10-7 for the period, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage and the Tigers went 0-3.
- Beckman scored the game-winner at 4:57 of the third period with the Crusaders on the power play. Junior Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) each posted an assist.
- With 1:21 left in the third period, the Tigers went with an empty net but the Crusaders were able to keep RIT from getting a shot on goal as Holy Cross secured the 2-1 victory. The Crusaders held the Tigers to three shots on goal in the third period as Holy Cross took eight.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- RIT outshot Holy Cross, 28-21.
- The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play, while the Tigers went 0-4.
- Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) had 27 saves for the Crusaders, while Jordan Ruby had 19.
- The Crusaders' defense blocked 28 shots on the night including a team-best six by freshman Erik Ouellette (Denver, Colo.).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Crusaders remain undefeated in Atlantic Hockey with a 3-0-3 record. This is the Crusaders best record after the first six Atlantic Hockey games since starting 5-0-1 in 2003-2004.
- The Crusaders are in second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with nine points (3-0-3).
- Ginn earned his 50th career win. His 50 wins are second all-time in school history as Tony Quesada (2002-2006) holds the record with 61 victories.
- Beckman's goal was his first collegiate game-winner.
- Ginn was named the first star of the game, while Ouellette was named the third star.
- The Crusaders are 5-2-3 versus RIT in the last 10 games between the two teams.
