Men's Hockey Skates To 3-3 Tie With RIT

The Lead: Freshmen Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.), T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) and Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) each scored a goal for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied the Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-3, in Atlantic Hockey action on Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,807 at the Gene Polisseni Center. The Crusaders remain undefeated in Atlantic Hockey with a 2-0-3 record. This is the first time the Crusaders have been undefeated after the first five league games since starting the AHA season at 4-0-1 in 2003-2004.   

HOW IT HAPPENED:                                                            

  • Just 1:12 after the opening faceoff, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead when Lopez scored his second goal of the season. Sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) posted an assist.
  • At 8:07 of the first period, Moore increased the Crusaders' lead to 2-0 when he netted his first collegiate goal. Pooley and freshman Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) each tallied an assist.    
  • RIT outshot Holy Cross, 10-8 in the first period, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play and the Tigers went 0-2.
  • The Tigers netted the only goal of the second period when Brady Norrish found the back of the net at 16:11 for his second goal of the year. Holy Cross outshot RIT, 16-7, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
  • At 12:25 of the third, Andrew Miller tied the contest at 2-2 for the Tigers with his second goal of the season.
  • Pooley gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead at 14:44 with his third goal of the season. Barrett and junior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each posted an assist.
  • Late in the third period, the Tigers went with an empty net and with just 1:09 remaining Matt Garbowsky scored the equalizer to send the game to overtime. The goal was his fourth of the year.
  • The Crusaders took the only two shots of the overtime as RIT goalie Jordan Ruby made both saves for the 3-3 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot RIT, 37-31.
  • Each team went 0-3 on the power play.
  • Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) had 28 saves for the Crusaders, while Ruby had 34.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Crusaders are still undefeated in Atlantic Hockey with a 2-0-3 record. This is the first time the Crusaders have been undefeated after the first five conference games since starting the AHA season at 4-0-1 in 2003-2004. 
  • Moore netted his first collegiate goal.
  • Pooley was named the second star of the game.
