The Lead: Freshman Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) led the way for the Crusaders with his first career collegiate hat trick as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Brown 5-0. Fellow freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) was also a strong offensive contributor scoring two goals in the third period. With his third shutout of the season and the seventh of his career, senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) broke the Holy Cross Division I single season shutout record and career shutout record respectively. The Crusaders are 4-1-3 in their last eight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ferrill opened the scoring early for Holy Cross at the 2:55 mark in the first period off an assist from senior Tommy Dwyer (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.). Carrying the puck around the back of the net, Dwyer centered it on goal for Ferrill who took one shot and put the rebound behind the stick side of Brown goalie Tim Ernst.
- Ferrill added to the Holy Cross lead with his second goal of the game at the 16:06 mark in the first period. Youso sent a pass to junior Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) who took a slapshot that was tipped by Ferrill and powered past Ernst. Holy Cross finished the period up 2-0.
- Ferrill quickly added to the Holy Cross lead to begin the second period with his third goal of the game at the 2:32 mark. Receiving a pass from sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.), Youso once again sent a leading pass through traffic where Ferrill collected the puck off a Brown deflection and drove a shot into the net.
- Brown went on the power play at 8:48 in the second period but was not able to capitalize on the man advantage. Holy Cross finished the second period up 3-0.
- Capitalizing on an early power play opportunity in the third period, Holy Cross increased its lead to 4-0 at the 1:50 mark. Moore scored over the stick side of Ernst off an assist from Barrett and Bolton.
- Less than two minutes later, Moore scored his second goal of the game between the legs of Ernst off an assist from freshman Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) and Bolton.
- The Crusaders outshot Brown 16-7 in the third period and finished the game with a 5-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross led Brown in face-offs won with a mark of 34-21
- The Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play while Brown went 0-1.
- Holy Cross outshot Brown 38-25.
- Ernst recorded 33 saves while Ginn recorded 25.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ferrill's hat trick was the first of his collegiate career and the 19th in Holy Cross Division I history which began in the 1998-1999 season. The last Holy Cross freshman to tally a hat trick was Everett Sheen on Nov. 24, 2007 at Air Force. The hat trick also brings Ferrill into a tie for most goals scored in a game in Holy Cross Division I history.
- With his third shutout of the season and the seventh of his career, Ginn broke the Holy Cross Division I single season shutout record and career shutout record respectively. Tony Quesada (2002-2006) previously held the career shutout record with six.
- Entering the game, the Crusaders ranked first in Atlantic Hockey and second nationally with 481 face-off wins. Junior Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) entered the game third in the nation with 184 face-off wins and collected 10 more on the afternoon.
- Holy Cross outscored its opponents 9-2 on the two-game home stand including a 4-2 win against Bentley on Tuesday Nov. 25, 2014. The Crusaders also outscored their opponents 20-13 in the month of November as they went 3-1-3.
- The Crusaders earned all three stars of the game with Ferrill, Ginn and Moore respectively.
- Youso and Bolton each recorded a career best three assists in a game. Dwyer recorded his first point of the season with an assist.
- Crusaders are now 4-4-0 all-time against Brown and 3-1-0 at the Hart Center.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders hit the road next weekend on Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6, for Atlantic Hockey action against Niagara (3-9-0, 3-5-0 AHC). Both games start at 7:05 p.m. The Crusaders are currently in second place in the AHC standings with 12 points. Holy Cross returns to the Hart Center on Tuesday, Dec. 30 for a 7:05 p.m. start against Yale.
