The Lead: Holy Cross freshman Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) scored his first career game winning goal in the second period while sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) posted one goal and one assist propelling the Crusaders to a 4-2 win against Atlantic Hockey rival Bentley.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Michael Reardon opened the scoring early for Bentley at the 1:36 mark with a glove side shot off an assist from teammates Matt Siekhaus and Alex Kubiak.
  • Holy Cross went on the power play at the 7:38 mark but was only able to launch one shot on net.
  • With four minutes remaining in the first period, Bentley with its top ranked power play in the country, went on the man advantage, but were held scoreless by a swarming Holy Cross defense
  • The Crusaders headed into the first intermission down 1-0.
  • Junior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) evened the score 1-1 with a shot that went blocker side top shelf at the 6:33 mark in the second period off an assist from freshman Tommy Muratore (Mendham, N.J.) and junior captain Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.).
  • Recovering the puck off his skate, sophomore Logan Smith (Littleton, Colo.) sent a pass to Vidal who skated the length of the ice and delivered a crossing pass to junior Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) who knocked it in, capitalizing on the Holy Cross power play and giving the Crusaders the 2-1 advantage.
  • Adding to the offense was Pooley, who scored stick side on a breakaway off an assist from Muratore and Barrett at 10:35 in the second period.
  • With just over 30 seconds remaining in the second period, Bentley brought the score within one with a wrap-around goal on the stick side from Derek Bacon, assisted by Reardon and Steve Weinstein.
  • Vidal crossed the puck to sophomore Brett McKinnon (Kelowna, British Columbia) who centered a pass to Barrett, netting the puck glove side to extend Holy Cross' lead 4-2 at 2:35 and accounting for the only goal of the third period.
  • Bentley pushed the aggressive tempo and went with an empty net at 1:57 in the third period but was not able to break the strong defensive front of Holy Cross.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Bentley 33-31.
  • The Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play while the Falcons went 0-1.
  • Holy Cross dominated Bentley in face offs won with a mark of 41-30.
  • Senior captain and goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) and Bentley goalie Gabe Antoni each recorded 29 saves apiece.                                                                                                     

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Holy Cross had the number one and number two stars of the game with Barrett and Pooley respectively.
  • Bentley entered the game ranked second in Atlantic Hockey with 3.42 goals scored per game, but the Holy Cross defense held them to only two goals in the game. Holy Cross doubled its average of 2.00 goals per game by finding the back of the net four different times.
  • Entering the night, Bentley ranked first in the nation with a .347 power play percentage (17 for 49) but went 0-1 against the Crusaders.
  • Pooley scored his fourth goal of the season and his first ever collegiate game winning goal.
  • The Crusaders win the first contest of a four-game series with Bentley this season. The Falcons went 3-0-0 versus the Crusaders last year.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 30, when they host ECAC opponent Brown at the Hart Center at 1:05 p.m.
