The Lead: Conor Andrle scored the game-winner with 10 seconds left in overtime for the Black Knights as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Army, 5-4, in Atlantic Hockey action on Friday night at Tate Rink.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) gave the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead when he scored his first collegiate goal just 46 seconds after the opening face-off. Freshman Erik Ouellette (Denver, Colo.) posted his first collegiate point with an assist on the goal.
- Just 31 seconds later, Brendan McGuire tied the game at 1-1 for the Black Knights.
- Army took a 2-1 lead at 4:35 of the first period when Clint Carlisle found the back of the net.
- But the Crusaders answered with a goal by sophomore Brett McKinnon (Kelowna, British Columbia) at 11:52. The goal was his third of the season. Ferrill and senior Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.) each posted an assist.
- With just 12 seconds left in the first period, Maurice Alvarez netted Army's third goal of the game as the Black Knights took a 3-2 advantage. Each team took nine shots for the period.
- Army netted the only goal of the second period when Zak Zaremba increased the Black Knights' lead to 4-2 at 8:04 of the second period. Army outshot Holy Cross, 10-8 in the period.
- At 7:08 of the third period and with the Crusaders on the power play, freshman Matt Scarth (Calgary, Alberta) netted his first collegiate goal to cut the Army lead to 4-3. Sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) and freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) each posted an assist on the goal.
- Then at 14:00 of the third period, junior Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) tied the game at 4-4 with his second goal of the season. Ferrill tallied his third point of the contest with an assist. Youso posted his second point of the game with an assist. The Crusaders outshot the Black Knights by a 19-8 margin in the period.
- Andrle scored the game-winner with just 10 seconds left in overtime to give Army the 5-4 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Army, 36-32
- The Crusaders scored on the only power play of the game for either team.
- Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) posted 27 saves, while Parker Gahagen had 32 saves.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ginn recorded his 3,000th career save. He now has 3,021 saves.
- Ferrill posted his first collegiate points with one goal and two assists.
- Scarth scored his first collegiate goal and Ouellette tallied his first collegiate point with an assist.
- Youso was named the third star of the game.
