The Lead: Freshman Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) and junior Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) both had goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Sacred Heart, 2-2, in Atlantic Hockey action on Saturday night at the Hart Center. Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) had 26 saves, which gives him 2,939 career saves and the all-time saves record for Holy Cross. The Crusaders win the two-game home-and-home series against the Pioneers as they defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, on Friday night in Milford, Conn.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders went up 1-0 at 6:32 in the first period when Pooley knocked in a pass from freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) from behind the net.
- Sacred Heart came back with a slap shot by Zach Luczyk at 11:02 in the first to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Crusaders and the Pioneers each had nine shots, while Holy Cross went 0-1 on the power play and Sacred Heart went 0-2.
- At 7:18 of the second period, freshman Matt Scarth (Calgary, Alberta) took a shot that deflected off of Lubanksi and went into the net. The goal moved the Crusaders ahead 2-1. Junior Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) also posted an assist on the goal.
- At 16:47 of the second period, Sacred Heart sophomore Spencer Graboski took a shot that found the top left corner of the net during a power play to tie the game at 2-2.
- In the second period, Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 13-8. In the second period Sacred Heart went 1-1 on the power play, while Holy Cross went 0-1.
- Holy Cross survived a Sacred Heart 5-3 power play with 5:05 left on the clock for 53 seconds in the third period to bring the game to overtime.
- Holy Cross took two shots in overtime, while Sacred Heart took one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart (29-28) but lost on face-offs (41-40).
- The Crusaders went 0-5 on the power play, while the Pioneers went 1-6.
- Ginn had 26 saves for the Crusaders, while Andrew Bodnarchuk had 27.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ginn broke the Holy Cross all-time career saves record when he stopped a shot from Sacred Heart sophomore Jordan Minello at 4:59 in the first period.
- Ginn's 26 saves brought him to 2,939 career saves, which moved him in front of Paul Pijanowski (1984-1987) who held the school's all-time record with 2,915 saves.
- Ginn also set the all-time career games played by a goalie record as he appeared in his 106th game.
- The Crusaders are still undefeated in the Atlantic Hockey conference with their 2-0-2 record.
