The Lead: Sophomore Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored two goals and junior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.) tied the game with just 1:36 left in the second half as the Holy Cross men's soccer team tied Army, 3-3, on Wednesday evening at Clinton Field in Patriot League action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Army took a 1-0 lead when Christian Ollen scored off a pass from Mario Da Silva for his second goal of the season just 6:18 after the start of the game.
- DeVivo almost tied the game in the 26th minute but his shot from eight yards out hit the right post.
- The Crusaders tied the game in the 49th minute when DeVivo scored on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on Army in the box. DeVivo sent a shot to the right side of the net for the goal.
- DeVivo then gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute when he netted his second goal of the game.
- But in the 85th minute, Sean Mogan found the back of the net to tie the contest at 2-2.
- After DeVivo had a shot hit the post on a breakaway in the 86th minute, Army went down the field as Shaban Abousaud scored on a header to give the Black Knights a 3-2 advantage.
- But with 1:36 left in the second half, Ceron tied the game at 3-3 when he scored on a free kick from 25 yards out to send the game to overtime. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
- Neither team was able to score the game-winner in overtime for the 3-3 final.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "We did not play great in the first half," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. "But at the start of the second half we really showed our character and netted two goals to take the lead. We made some mistakes at the end of the second half but I give the team credit for battling and competing as we were able to score the equalizer."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made eight saves for Holy Cross, as Winston Boldt posted six saves for the Black Knights.
- Army outshot Holy Cross, 24-18, while the Black Knights had 11 shots on goal and Holy Cross posted nine.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- DeVivo has a team-best seven goals this season, while he has 13 career goals.
- Ceron netted his first collegiate goal.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host Patriot League opponent Bucknell at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 1:35 p.m. Holy Cross will hold its Alumni Game at 10:00 a.m. and the Luke Dunivant Award will be presented at halftime of the Bucknell game.
