Men's Hockey Drops 7-1 Contest To Penn State

The Lead: Scott Conway scored two goals for the Nittany Lions as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Big 10 opponent Penn State, 7-1, in front of a crowd of 5,988 at the Pegula Ice Arena on Sunday. Penn State wins the two-game series as the Nittany Lions won the first game by a 3-1 score on Friday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Penn State nearly scored the first goal of the game at 9:58 of the first period when Taylor Holstrom went on a breakaway and fired a shot that hit the post.
  • Senior captain Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) was outstanding in net in the first period with 15 saves, as the Nittany Lions outshot the Crusaders, 15-5. Each team went 0-1 on the power play.
  • At 2:08 of the second period, the Crusaders went on a 5-3 power play for 1:05 but were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Penn State took a 1-0 lead at 14:49 of the second period, when Holstrom passed the puck to Casey Bailey who then sent a shot to the upper right corner of the net.
  • At 17:04 of the second period, Curtis Loik fired a one-timer to the bottom right side of the net for a power play goal to increase Penn State's lead to 2-0. The Nittany Lions outshot the Crusaders, 14-13 for the period.
  • The Nittany Lions made it a 3-0 contest at 3:33 of the third period with a goal by Eric Scheid.
  • Just 1:22 later, David Glen found the back of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 4-0 advantage.
  • At 7:01, junior Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) sent a slap shot to the back of the net. Sophomore Logan Smith (Littleton, Colo.) and junior Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) each posted an assist on the goal.
  • At 13:15, Scott Conway netted his first collegiate goal to increase the lead to 5-1.
  • Jacob Friedman made it a 6-1 game at 15:47 when he found back of the net.
  • Penn State concluded the scoring at 18:22 when Conway scored his second goal of the game for the 7-1 final score.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Penn State outshot Holy Cross, 44-30.
  • The Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play, while the Nittany Lions went 2-7.
  • Ginn made 34 saves for the Crusaders, while Matthew Skoff posted 29 saves for the Nittany Lions. Freshman goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) played in the final 4:13 of the game as he made three saves.                                                                                       

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ginn now has 2,886 career saves. He is 30 saves away from setting the Holy Cross all-time career saves record. Paul Pijanowski (1984-1987) holds the school's all-time record with 2,915 saves. 
  • Berrafato made his collegiate debut with 4:13 left in the third period.
  • Bolton's goal was his second of the season and the fifth of his career. His two goals are tied for the team lead.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action when they play a home-and-home series with Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Friday's game will be played at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn., while Saturday's game will be at the Hart Center in Worcester.
