The Lead: Geoff Fries scored the game-winning goal for the Midshipmen in the second half as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Navy, 2-1, on Saturday evening at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Patriot League action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead just 1:08 after the game started when junior Eddie Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) found the back of the net off a header from a corner kick by freshman Justin Carfora (Plainview, N.Y.). The goal was Viscount's second of the season.
- But the Midshipmen responded when Jamie Dubyoski scored his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 (6:06).
- Junior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made three saves as the game remained tied 1-1 after the first half.
- Fries scored the game-winner in the 59th minute when he fired a one-timer to the back of the net from a pass by Dubyoski.
- The Navy defense only allowed one shot on goal in the second half by the Crusaders as a shot by junior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.) was saved by Jackson Morgan in the 86th minute.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "We had a great start to the game, but after that we did not have enough attacking power," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. "We also gave up the ball on defense which cost us the goals Navy scored. We knew it was going to be a tough game but we needed to keep the ball more. We will regroup and prepare for the game at Army."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wright made seven saves for Holy Cross, as Morgan posted one save for the Mids.
- Navy out the Crusaders, 21-6, while the Mids had nine shots on goal and Holy Cross posted two.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to play Patriot League opponent Army at 7:00 p.m.
