The Lead: Freshman Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) scored his first collegiate goal and senior goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 47 saves, but the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Big 10 opponent Penn State, 3-1, in front of a sold out crowd of 6,043 at the Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night. These two teams will conclude their two-game series on Sunday, Oct. 26, at noon in University Park, Pa.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first period went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot Penn State, 14-10, as the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Nittany Lions went 0-1.
- Ginn made a save on a breakaway by Ricky DeRosa at 15:29 of the first period. At 18:51 of the first period, a goal by Penn State's Dylan Richard was called back after an official video review as Richard was then called for goaltender interference. With just 25 seconds left, sophomore Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) fired a shot towards the upper right corner of the net that was gloved by Matthew Skoff.
- At 8:20 of the second period, the Nittany Lions went on a five-on-three power play for 1:41, but the Crusaders were able to keep Penn State off the scoreboard.
- But at 13:49 of the second period, DeRosa fired a shot to the lower left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
- At 7:23 of the third period, the Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 when junior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) sent a pass from behind the net to Pooley who blasted a shot past Skoff for his first collegiate goal. Freshman T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) also posted an assist on the goal.
- The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead at 12:32 when Eric Scheid knocked in a rebound off of a slap shot by Kenny Brooks for a power play goal.
- Penn State concluded the night's scoring when Casey Bailey found the back of the net at 16:14 for the 3-1 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Penn State outshot Holy Cross, 50-30.
- The Crusaders went 0-3 on the power play, while the Nittany Lions went 1-9.
- Ginn made 47 saves for the Crusaders, while Skoff posted 29 saves for the Nittany Lions.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ginn's 47 saves are tied for the fourth most in a game in the program's Division I record book. Ginn received the second star of the game for his performance.
- Pooley's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
