  • Records: Colgate (5-7-1, 2-3-0 PL); Holy Cross (5-6-2, 2-3-0 PL)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium)
  • Date: October 18, 2014
  • The Lead: Colgate's Ethan Kutler tallied the game-winning goal and recorded a pair of assists to help lead the visiting Raiders to a 3-2 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League men's soccer action on Saturday evening at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Colgate struck first with a goal in the sixth minute of action (5:07). Off a corner kick by Kutler, Zach Taman headed the ball into the box where Geinda Smith headed it past Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) to put the Raiders ahead 1-0.
  • Just over a minute later (6:43), Colgate increased its lead to 2-0. Kutler sent a long pass down the right side to Zach Pagani, who dribbled 25 yards and launched a shot from just outside the box into the back of the net.
  • Holy Cross had a chance to cut into the deficit in the 73rd minute, as freshman forward Arno Rupp (Wolfsburg, Austria) had a penalty kick, but Colgate goalkeeper Ricky Brown made the diving save to preserve the shutout.
  • Less than a minute later (73:32), however, the Crusaders made it 2-1 off a goal by sophomore midfielder Peter Ayers (Lewisburg, Pa.) who gathered a Colgate clear and ripped a shot from 30 yards out past Brown.
  • Colgate took advantage of a foul in the offensive box and was rewarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute (80:50). Kutler converted the penalty for the eventual game-winning goal to give the Raiders the 3-1 advantage.
  • Holy Cross battled back and sliced into the margin with a goal in the 87th minute (86:57). Ayers sent in a shot from the top of the box that was saved by a Colgate defender. The rebound was gathered by sophomore forward Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) who scored from six yards out to make the score 3-2.
