The Lead: Sophomore forward Nick Finn (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Logan Smith (Littleton, Colo.) each scored for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with American International on Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at the Hart Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior forward Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore forward Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) each had shots on goal in the final seconds of the first period, but were saved by AIC goalie Alex Murray.
- In the first period, the Crusaders had 14 shots on goal while AIC had seven.
- Johno May took a shot on goal as David Gandara took May's rebound and knocked it into the net at 15:12 past the reach of senior goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) to give AIC the 1-0 lead in the second period.
- Junior forward Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) gave the puck to junior captain Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.) who sent a pass from behind the net. Finn knocked the puck in past Murray as the score evened at 1-1 at 18:58.
- At 6:01 of the third period, Smith slapped a shot past Murray giving the Crusaders the 2-1 lead.
- AIC answered at 2:39 later on passes from Carson Grolla and David Norris as the puck found the stick of Alexander MacMillan to even the score at 2-2.
- Holy Cross outshot AIC 10-2 during the overtime period, but the game ended in a tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Ginn had 20 saves for the Crusaders, while Murray had 53 saves for the Yellow Jackets.
- Holy Cross outshot AIC (55-22) and won 37 face-offs as AIC took 28.
- Each team went 0-1 on the power play.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Finn's goal was his first of the year, as Lubanski and Vidal tallied their first assists of the season.
- Smith's goal was his first of the season. He leads the team in points this season with three, as he has one goal and two assists.
- Holy Cross is undefeated all -time in Atlantic Hockey openers with a 10-0-2 record.
