The Lead: Sophomore Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Lafayette, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium in Patriot League action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when freshman Arno Rupp (Wolfsberg, Austria) sent a free kick to the lower left side of the net.
- Lafayette tied the contest at 1-1 in the 62nd minute when Alec Golini scored on a shot that went to the lower left corner of the goal.
- Holy Cross took a 2-1 advantage in the 67th minute when junior Eddie Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) sent a header to the right side of the net off a crossing pass from Rupp.
- With just 2:14 left in the second half, Eric West scored off a header from corner kick by Ben Marks to tie the contest and force overtime.
- DeVivo's game-winner in the 102nd minute was off a crossing pass from Viscount that Rupp headed to DeVivo as he then found the back of the net to give the Crusaders the double-overtime victory.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "This game shows how resilient the team is," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. "The players determination to work hard and our strong character was very evident today. To score the game-winner in overtime after allowing a late goal in regulation shows our true character and ability to work as a team."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) had five saves for Holy Cross, as Sandy Leavy posted three saves for the Leopards.
- Each team took 12 shots, while Lafayette led in shots on goal (7-6), as the Leopards also led in corner kicks (7-3).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- DeVivo now has a team-best three game-winning goals this season. He has four for his career.
- The Crusaders are now 1-1-2 in overtime this season.
