Crusaders Fall To Georgetown In Season Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior wide receiver Mike Fess (Caldwell, N.J.) caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by Georgetown 28-21 at Fitton Field. The Crusaders finish the year with an overall record of 3-9 and a 1-4 mark in the Patriot League, while the Hoyas wrap up the season at 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 11:54-mark of the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Peter Pujals (Glenview, Ill.). The Hoyas tied the game at 7-7 on a five-yard scoring run by Joel Kimpela, before Pujals threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Fess, giving Holy Cross a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Georgetown made the score 14-14 in the second quarter on a one-yard scoring run by Kyle Nolan, then took a 20-14 lead in the third quarter on a pair of field goals by Matt MacZura (from 29 and 39 yards). The Crusaders had a chance to regain the lead early in the fourth quarter, before fumbling on the Hoyas' two-yard line.

Georgetown would later make the score 28-14 when Nolan ran 82 yards for a touchdown with 1:57 left to play. Holy Cross responded with a 12-yard scoring strike from Pujals to freshman wide out Jake Wieczorek (Cumming, Ga.), but the Hoyas recovered the ensuing onside kick and were able to run out the clock.

Pujals completed 23 of 39 passes on the day for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Nolan led Georgetown by hitting on 19 of 32 passes for 227 yards, while rushing 18 times for 143 yards.

For the Crusader defense, sophomore cornerback Steven Martinez (Dallas, Texas) totaled eight tackles, two tackles for loss and two pass breakups, while senior linebacker Tyler Zeoli (King of Prussia, Pa.) added seven tackles with a forced fumble.
