Holy Cross Men's Hockey Tops Canisius, 3-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with his first goal of the season as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Canisius, 3-2, on Friday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 4-2-1 overall (3-1-1 AHA), while the Golden Griffins fall to 1-5-2 (1-3-1 AHA). These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

Holy Cross made it a 1-0 game when freshman Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) scored his third goal of the season at the 17:52 mark of the first period when he blasted in a rebound off a shot by junior Marty Dams (Monotick, Ontario). Senior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) was also credited with an assist giving him 99 career points (41 goals & 58 assists). For the period, the Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins by a 17-8 margin, while each team went 0-1 on the power play.

Canisius tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by Josh Heidinger at 2:05 into the second period. Canisius went on a five minute major power play and at 17:47 the Golden Griffins took the lead with a power play goal by David Cianfrini. The Golden Griffins outshot the Crusaders, 8-6, while Holy Cross went 0-2 on the man-advantage and Canisius went 1-2.

At 9:09 into the third period, sophomore Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) knocked the puck into the left side of the net for a power play goal to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was Sheahan's fourth of the season. Freshman Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) and Forshner assisted on the goal. Forshner then scored the game-winner at 11:53. Junior Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) and Forshner went on a two-on-one as Thomson passed the puck to Forshner who buried it into the goal. Senior Jim Tselikis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also earned an assist. Canisius went with an empty-net for the final 58 seconds of the period but could not tie the game as the contest ended in the 3-2 final score.

Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 19 saves to improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while Bryce Luker stopped 27 shots and is now 1-3-1 on the year. Holy Cross outshot Canisius by a 30-21 margin, while the Crusaders went 1-4 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 1-3.
