Holy Cross Men's Soccer Defeated By Bucknell, 2-0

Sept. 24, 2005

Box Score

Lewisburg, Pa. - Bucknell freshmen Anthony Ferraro and Mark Schmiegel netted second-half goals to lead the Bison men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross Saturday afternoon at Varsity Soccer Field. Bucknell improves to 4-2-2 overall and open Patriot League play with a win, while Holy Cross' five-game winning streak was snapped. The Crusaders fall to 5-3 (0-1 Patriot League).

Ferraro put Bucknell ahead 1-0 in the 46th minute after a scoreless first half of play. He headed a Tim Faneck pass past Crusader goalkeeper Richard Whipple to give the Bison what would be the game-winning goal.

Holy Cross had a golden opportunity to even the score about seven minutes into the second half when freshman Gerry Dickinson headed a ball from inside the box that rolled just wide right of the goal. The Crusaders recovered it and senior defender Kevin Leonard fired a hard line drive that nearly snuck past Edwards' outstretched hand, but it hit the crossbar instead.

Schmiegel then added an insurance tally at the 67:15 mark when he took a pass from sophomore Corey Curnutte in a crowd and snuck it past Whipple for the 2-0 cushion.

Whipple finished with three saves for Holy Cross, while Edwards recorded his fourth win of the season after making four stops.

Holy Cross had an 18-9 shot advantage and a 7-2 corner kick edge.

The Crusaders host Hartford in non-conference action on Tuesday, September 27 at 4:00 p.m.
