Matt Fanning is in the seventh year of his second stint on Tom Gilmore’s coaching staff in 2017. He serves as the team’s recruiting coordinator and video coordinator, and will be coaching the wide receivers for the fourth straight season.
Over the last three seasons, three of Fanning’s receivers have earned All-Patriot League honors: Brendan Flaherty in 2015 and 2016, Kalif Raymond in 2015 and Jake Wieczorek in 2014. Flaherty was also named a second team All-American in 2015.
From 2011-2013, Fanning served as the team’s running back’s coach. In 2013, he helped the Crusaders total 1,860 rushing yards as a team, their highest total since running for 1,927 yards in 1991.
Fanning returned to Holy Cross from Boston College, where he was a graduate assistant coach during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. During his two years with the Eagles, he helped the team to an overall record of 15-11 and a pair of bowl game appearances.
Fanning previously served as Holy Cross’ running backs coach in 2008. During the 2008 season, he helped lead the team to an overall record of 7-4 and a 5-1 mark in the Patriot League, with tailback Mike Kielt earning second team All-Patriot League honors.
A 2007 Holy Cross graduate, Fanning earned two letters as a wide receiver for the Crusaders. During his senior season in 2006, Fanning ranked fourth on the team in receiving with 35 catches for 475 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team’s top punt returner, averaging 10.4 yards on 20 returns. Following the 2006 season, Fanning received both the Msgr. George S. L. Connor Award and the Daniel Allen Sportsmanship Award. He was also selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a junior in 2005.
Fanning earned a master’s degree in administrative studies from Boston College in 2010. He resides in Stow with his wife, Nicole, and son, Lucas.
