EASTON, Pa. — The Holy Cross football team defeated Lafayette, 38-30, in Patriot League action on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Junior quarterback
David Lynch keyed the highest-scoring performance by the Crusaders this year, passing for four touchdowns with 230 yards on 22 completions. Sophomore receiver
Lincoln Fisher had a team-best 105 receiving yards and a touchdown, while also blocking a punt.
Junior receiver
Ty Curran caught two touchdowns and had 43 yards on the day, and junior tight end
Mason McSweeney had three receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back
Joseph Williams rushed for 50 yards and a score. Junior running back
Datrell Jones had a season-high 44 yards on 10 carries.
Senior linebacker
Adam Due had an all-around day on defense, with two tackles for loss, including a seven-yard sack, a quarterback hurry and a fourth-quarter interception.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Crusaders went three-and-out to open the game, freshman long snapper Colin Mackey recovered a muffed punt to give the Crusaders the ball back at the Lafayette 29-yard line.
- Williams began the drive with a 15-yard carry, and went on to score from three yards out to give Holy Cross a 7-0 lead early.
- The Crusader defense forced a three-and-out, and Fisher blocked a punt that was recovered at the Lafayette 19-yard line. Lynch then connected with McSweeney for a 19-yard touchdown reception, making it a 14-0 lead for the Crusaders with 8:53 left in the first.
- The Leopards responded with a touchdown on the next drive. Holy Cross followed with a 14-yard touchdown of its own, with Lynch finding Curran to make it a 20-7 advantage for the Crusaders.
- Lafayette and Holy Cross traded field goals to start the second quarter.
- Lynch threw a 26-yard touchdown to Fisher, extending the Crusader lead to 30-10 with 3:49 remaining in the half. The Leopards scored with 1:56 to go to bring them within 30-17 and cap a high-scoring half.
- The Leopards had two long completions and capitalized on a pass interference call to cut within 30-24 with 4:09 left in the third.
- Lynch connected with Curran again early in the fourth quarter, with a 33-yard completion for Curran's second touchdown of the day. Sophomore Lucas Weir had a successful rush to the end zone for the two-point conversion, extending the Holy Cross lead to 38-24 with 14:08 left in the contest.
- A fourth-down stop by the Holy Cross defense and a pick by Due with 3:09 remaining in the game proved critical down the stretch. The Leopards were able to score with 54 seconds remaining, but were unsuccessful on the two-point try and ensuing onside kick attempt, securing the win for the Crusaders.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross' 30 first-half points were its most since scoring 31 against the Leopards in 2024.
- Curran's touchdowns were the first of his career.
- Lynch is the first Crusader quarterback to pass for four touchdowns since the 2024 season, when Joe Pesansky did so against Colgate.
- McSweeney's 43 yards were a career best.
- The Crusader defense had six pass breakups, a season best.
- Holy Cross has won six consecutive games in Easton dating back to the 2014 season.
