WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore defender
Peter Borges scored the first goal of his collegiate career with just two minutes remaining in the second half, to lift the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Stonehill at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 1-3-5 on the season, while the Skyhawks fall to 2-4-2 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Sophomore forward
Archie Hatcher opened the scoring from 12 yards out in the 13th minute, with assists from sophomore midfielder
Liam Heneghan and sophomore forward
Jack Fiedler.
• Less than six minutes later, Fiedler put the ball just inside the left post from six yards out to make the score 2-0, following a centering pass from Hatcher.
• Stonehill cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 68th minute on a penalty kick by Nate Monteiro.
• Then in the 88th minute, Monteiro connected on a direct free kick from just outside the box to tie the game at 2-2.
• But Holy Cross reclaimed the lead when Borges put a free kick from beyond midfield just out of the goalkeeper's reach and into the net.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• The Crusaders finished the night with a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
• Hatcher now has 26 points on 11 goals and four assists in 25 career games played.
• With the win, Holy Cross extends its unbeaten streak to five games.
NEXT UP:
• The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they play host to Loyola (Md.) at 12 p.m.
