Holy Cross Athletics

OXFORD, Ohio — The Holy Cross football team was defeated 45-7 by FBS foe Miami on Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium.

Junior wide receiver SirCharles Gordon made his return to his home state of Ohio for the Crusaders (0-3) and hauled in personal-high three receptions for 54 yards including a career-long 36 yard reception from junior quarterback David Lynch. Sophomore wide receiver Lincoln Fisher also finished with three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Starting quarterback David McComb was a perfect 13-for-13 passing for Miami (1-1) with 234 yards and three touchdown passes. He added three carries for 12 yards and a rushing score on the ground.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

• Miami scored first using an eight play, 58-yard drive capped off by a QB keeper for the 7-0 lead with 9:31 left in the opening stanza.
• After scoring his first career rushing TD, McComb tossed a 34-yard touchdown down the right sideline on the RedHawks second possession for the 14-0 lead.
• The RedHawks scored on their third drive following a pass interference call crossing the goal line on a wildcat run over right tackle to increase the edge to 21-0 with 13:35 left before half.
• The hosts scored a 10-yard touchdown to cap off a three play 58-yard drive in 1:33 of game time to expand the lead to 28-0.
• The Crusaders longest play of the first half went for 36 yards when Lynch found Gordon on a screen pass down the left sideline with 5:28 left. On the same drive, the Crusaders went for it on first down but were short of the line to gain.
• Miami added onto their advantage right before halftime to lead 42-0.
• On the Crusaders first drive of the second half, they guided the ball to the red zone on the strength of a pair of Gordon catches and a sophomore running back Joseph Williams 21-yard reception from Lynch. Lynch then lofted a go ball to Fisher to the back corner of the end zone putting Holy Cross on the board with 30 seconds left in the third stanza.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 

• Fisher's touchdown reception was his first of the season.
• Junior running back Datrell Jones produced a season-long 14 yard rush in the third quarter.
• Junior linebacker Will Miller recorded a career-high eight tackles in the contest as well as junior defensive back Braden Haas (seven), junior linebacker Ron Burton (five) and junior defensive lineman Cooper Ackerman (four).
• Sophomore wide receiver Lucas Weir made his first collegiate catch in the contest.

• The Crusaders return to the northeast to take on No. 19 Yale (0-0) for Family Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.
