WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore forward
Archie Hatcher scored his second goal in the last two games, but the Holy Cross men's soccer team was defeated by Rhode Island 2-1 at the Rhode Island Soccer Complex. The Crusaders fall to 0-2-1 on the year, while the Rams improve to 1-2 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Rhode Island opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Theo Harris connected on a header after the ball was deflected into the box.
• The Rams made the score 2-0 in the 25th minute on a penalty kick by Tiago Barriguinha after a hand ball.
• Holy Cross responded in the 59th minute, with Hatcher taking a pass from senior midfielder
Adric Rosato and blasting it just inside the left post from 23 yards out.
• The Crusaders had several other good scoring chances down the stretch, but were unable to find the equalizer as Rhode Island held on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• The Rams finished the night with a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
• Freshman goalkeeper
Caleb Klepacz made two saves.
• Hatcher now has 19 points on eight goals and three assists in 19 career games played.
NEXT UP:
• Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when it travels to No. 7 Vermont for a 6 p.m. game.
