Softball swept in doubleheader at Boston University on Saturday

BOSTON –  The Holy Cross softball team dropped both games in its weekend doubleheader at Boston University on Saturday, Apr. 25. The Crusaders fell 11-2 in five innings in game one and dropped game two, 8-4.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 2, BOSTON UNIVERSITY 11 (FINAL/5)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 3-14), 1.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, 11 runs (10 earned), strikeout, seven walks
  • Boston University: Kasey Ricard (W, 28-6), 4.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, two runs (two earned), three strikeouts, two walks
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, no runs, two strikeouts
  • Boston University: Haley Ganino, 1.0 inning pitched, no hits, no runs
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Boston University jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Freshman Bella Nugent got Holy Cross on the board in the top of the second, hitting a solo home run to right field, making it 3-1.
  • The Terriers added eight runs in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 11-1.
  • Sophomore Kate Trudgen made it 11-2 with an RBI-double to left-center in the top of the third.
  • Both sides went scoreless the rest of the way allowing BU to claim a run-rule victory in five innings.
GAME TWO: HOLY CROSS 4, BOSTON UNIVERSITY 8 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Bridget Mulkeen (L, 4-8), 6.0 innings pitched, 10 hits allowed, eight runs (five earned), two strikeouts, four walks
  • Boston University: Kasey Ricard, 3.2 innings pitched, five hits allowed, four runs (four earned), three strikeouts
IN RELIEF: 
  • Boston University: Haley Ganino (W, 7-2), two hits allowed, no runs, walk
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • BU's Brooke Deppiesse scored in the bottom of the first on Megan Coyle's groundout to make it 1-0.
  • Kylie Doherty homered to right in the bottom of the third, extending BU's lead to 2-0.
  • Freshman Emily McCandless and senior Anna Brait hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth inning, putting Holy Cross ahead 4-2. McCandless drove in freshman Bella Nugent and senior Ali Sniegocki with a three-run home run to left-center. Brait followed it up with a solo shot to right.
  • Boston University regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to make it 5-4.
  • The Terriers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending their lead to 8-4
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders close out the series with the Terriers on Sunday, Apr. 26
  • First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
