Softball drops midweek doubleheader at Brown, Roncone reaches 400 career strikeouts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The Holy Cross softball team dropped both games in its midweek doubleheader at Brown on Tuesday, Apr. 21. The Crusaders fell 4-0 in game one and dropped game two by a final score of 7-0.

Senior pitcher Sophia Roncone surpassed 400 career strikeouts after fanning four batters in game two. Roncone becomes just the third player in program history to reach 400 strikeouts, joining Kelly Nelson '22 (602) and Genoa Grosch '99 (579). 


GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 0, BROWN 4 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Bridget Mulkeen (L, 4-7), 5.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, four runs (two earned), three strikeouts, four walks
  • Brown: Edie Cobb (W, 5-10), 2.0 innings pitched, no hits, no runs, two strikeouts, two walks
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 0.2 innings pitched, no hits, no runs, walk
  • Brown: Macy Borowski, 5.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, no runs, six strikeouts

  • After five scoreless innings, Brown broke the shutout with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Brown grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Maya Choski in the top of the first inning.
  • Brown's Abby Bettencourt doubled their lead with a solo shot of her own in the bottom of the fourth, going ahead 2-0.
  • The Bears added five runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending their lead to 7-0.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders travel to Boston University this weekend for their final conference road series of the regular season.
  • The three game series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 25.
  • First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with game two set for 2:00 p.m.
