Softball drops rubber match against Bucknell on Sunday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Bucknell by a final score of 8-7 to close out the weekend series on Sunday, Mar. 22. Buckell wins the series 2-1 after the two sides split Saturday's doubleheader.

Reagan Powell walked it off for the Bison in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two out RBI single to left-center field.

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-5), 6.2 innings pitched, 13 hits allowed, eight runs (five earned), seven strikeouts, two walks
  • Bucknell: Avery Powers, 3.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, run (one earned), three strikeouts

  • Bucknell: Payton Hale, 1.0 inning pitched, no hits allowed, no runs, walk

AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • McCandless started the scoring on Sunday with a solo home run to right-center in the top of the second to make it 1-0 Holy Cross.
  • Bucknell tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by Powell.
  • The Bison took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Brooke Popella.
  • Pietrzak put the Crusaders ahead 4-3 with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth.
  • Haley Speicher put Bucknell ahead, 6-4, on a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Freshman Bella Nugent gave the lead back to Holy Cross in the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit two-run double to center. 
  • Popella came around to score on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 7-7.
  • Powell delivered the walk-off for Bucknell, ripping a two-out RBI single to left-center, securing an 8-7 win.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders will return home and host a doubleheader against Dartmouth for their home opener on Tuesday, Mar. 24.
  • First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. followed by game two at 4:00 p.m.
