Softball falls to UMBC in Saturday doubleheader

BALTIMORE, Md. – Holy Cross softball fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader to UMBC, 5-3 in the opener and 11-8 in game two.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 3, UMBC 5 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-3), 6.0 inning pitched, seven hits allowed, five runs (five earned), three strikeouts, walk, HBP
  • UMBC: Jayda Koontz (W, 2-4), 7.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, three runs (none earned), six strikeouts, two walks
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross struck first in the top of the first when senior Anna Brait reached on a UMBC error, allowing sophomore Silje Emery to score and make it 1-0.
  • UMBC answered back in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Taylor Nicholson to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Junior Caroline Higgins came around to score on a fielding error by the Retrievers in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 2-1 lead.
  • UMBC scored four unanswered runs to win game one 5-3.
GAME TWO: HOLY CROSS 8, UMBC 11 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Bridget Mulkeen (L, 1-3), 5.2 innings pitched, 12 hits allowed, 11 runs (four earned), strikeout, five walks
  • UMBC: Maggie Frisvold, 3.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, four runs (four earned),seven strikeouts, two walks
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 0.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, no runs, walk
  • UMBC: Elena Clark-Wilson, 2.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, three runs (three earned), three strikeouts, five walks
  • Bella Nunn (W, 2-0), 0.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one run (one earned), walk
  • Jayda Koontz (S, 1), 1.0 inning pitched, one hit allowed, no runs, three strikeouts
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UMBC jumped out to a 2-0 lead as a result of RBI knocks from Brittany Howe and Nicholson.
  • The Crusaders responded in the top of the fourth when Emma Pietrzak belted a grand slam to left-center, giving Holy Cross a 4-2 lead.
  • The Retrievers got a run back in the fifth inning to make it 4-3.
  • UMBC walked in freshman Olivia Pignatello with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3.
  • Sophomore Kate Trudgen cleared the bases with an RBI double to left, increasing Holy Cross' lead to 8-3.
  • UMBC stormed back in bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs and win game two by a final score of 11-8.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders will play another doubleheader with UMBC on Sunday, Mar. 15.
  • First pitch for game one is set for 11:00 a.m. followed by game two at 1:30 p.m.
