Softball comes up short at UMBC

BALTIMORE — The Holy Cross softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against UMBC on Sunday, March 15.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 2, UMBC 7 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings (L, 1-4), 4.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, five runs (five earned), three strikeouts, walk, HBP
  • UMBC: Maggie Frisvold (W, 3-3), 7.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs (two earned), seven strikeouts, walk
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Bella Nugent, 2.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs (two earned), strikeout, walk
AT THE PLATE:  HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Retrievers jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • A home run by Sniegocki cut the score in half in the top of the second. 
  • UMBC responded with a home run of their own to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. A sac fly extended their lead to 4-1. 
  • Grady had an RBI single up the middle to score Sniegocki in the fifth inning, bringing the Crusaders within 4-2. 
  • UMBC had three unanswered runs to secure the 7-2 win in Game 1. 
GAME TWO: HOLY CROSS 0, UMBC 5 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-3), 6.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs (five earned), strikeout, four walks
  • UMBC: Jayda Koontz (W, 4-4), 7.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, no runs, five strikeouts, walk
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Retrievers got things started with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and an RBI single extended their lead to 3-0 in the opening frame. 
  • A sac fly made it a 4-0 game in favor of UMBC in the fifth, and that lead grew to 5-0 in the sixth after a single to short.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders commence Patriot League action with a three-game set against Bucknell. 
  • Holy Cross will head to Lewisburg, Pa. for a pair of games on Saturday, March 21, followed by a single contest on Sunday, March 22.
