WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Bucknell, 2-1, in Patriot League action Saturday morning at the Hart Turf Field.
With the win, Holy Cross improves to 6-3 (2-1 Patriot League), while Bucknell moves to 4-6 (0-3 Patriot League).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman Marianna MacLean opened the scoring for both sides six minutes into the first quarter, netting a rebound off her own shot.
- Bucknell held the slight edge in shots in the second quarter, 3-2, but a defensive save by sophomore Rachel Egan preserved the 1-0 Holy Cross lead.
- The Bison tied the game at 1-1 on their first penalty corner opportunity of the game five minutes into the second half.
- Holy Cross put on the pressure in the fourth quarter, outshooting Bucknell 7-3 and earning four penalty corners to the Bison's two.
- With 15 seconds remaining in the final quarter of regulation, Holy Cross requested a referrel which led to a penalty corner opportunity. Senior Marissa MacLean sent the insert to her sister, Marianna, who bumped the stick stop to Egan for the strike that found its way to the backboard for the 2-1 Holy Cross lead and eventual win.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Junior Mia McCloskey recorded four saves in her fifth win of the season.
- Marianna MacLean is now tied for second in the league for goals (7), sits in third for assists (6), and is second in points (20).
- Holy Cross is now 21-20 all-time against Bucknell, with today's win marking their first over the Bison since Oct. 15, 2016 (1-0, 2ot).
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will take a short trip up the Mass. Pike on Friday, Oct. 9 when they face Boston University at 6 p.m.
