Men's ice hockey falls in Atlantic Hockey opener to Army

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to Army, 5-2, in Saturday's Atlantic Hockey opener at the Hart Center Rink.

Holy Cross moves to 2-3-0 (0-1-0 AHA), while Army improves to 1-1-0 (1-0-0 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Army got on the board first, netting a goal 1:04 into the opening period.
  • The first period would end with 1:43 remaining due to a broken pane of glass, and be resumed after a delay.
  • The Black Knights came out firing in the second period - striking three times, two of which were on the power play - to take the 4-0 lead into the third period.
  • Army netted their fifth goal five minutes into the final period, their third power play goal of the night.
  • Junior Owen Kim spoiled the shutout attempt for the Black Knights, striking on back-to-back power play opportunities with 6:57 and 6:12 to play in regulation.
  • On the first goal, Kim skated a pass from senior Will Elias up the ice and sent a shot on net that bounced past the Army netminder. For the second goal, Kim picked up the loose puck off a faceoff win by junior Matt Kursonis and flipped it over the shoulder of the goaltender.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sophomore Danick Leroux recorded 18 saves in net, while senior Connor MacKenzie stopped 10 in relief.
  • Kursonis led both sides with 13 faceoff wins, finishing with a .765 success rate.
  • With his two goals tonight, Kim extended his point streak to four games and posted his third multi-point game of the season.

UP NEXT:

  • The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday Oct. 18, for a 4 p.m. matchup, which will broadcast on both FloHockey and NESN.
  • In honor of Youth Hockey Day at the Hart Center Rink, the team will host a postgame skate and autograph session.
