WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team outscored Army by a 26-10 margin in the fourth quarter en route to a 63-48 victory over the Black Knights on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center Arena.
The Crusaders are now 13-8 (7-3 PL) and sit tied for second in the Patriot League standings along with Army who falls to 16-5 (7-3 PL) with the setback.
Holy Cross held the Black Knights without a point over the final 4:01 and closed the game on a 10-0 run to secure a third straight victory.
Senior
Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly led the Crusaders with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting (4-of-5 3PT), while classmate
Meg Cahalan had 13 points of her own. The duo of junior
Kendall Eddy and senior
Kaitlyn Flanagan added 10 points apiece in the victory.
Camryn Tade scored 12 points to pace the Black Knights as Holy Cross limited leading scorer Kya Smith (14.2 ppg) to seven points on 3-of-9 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Things were deadlocked at six in the early stages of the first quarter when a Flanagan layup sparked a 7-3 spurt over the remainder of the stanza for a 13-9 Crusader lead after one.
- Holy Cross continued to lead through the entirety of the second quarter and scored the final four points including a layup from senior Simone Foreman off a feed from Eddy with one second left to make it a 29-19 advantage at the halftime.
- After a bucket by junior Janie Bachmann that gave Holy Cross a 34-25 edge with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter, the Black Knights began to fight back and used a 13-0 run to take a late lead. Trailing by four in the final seconds, Cahalan buried a three to trim the deficit to one at 38-37 at the end of three.
- Each team recorded a three-point play to begin the fourth before a Cahalan jumper gave the Crusaders the lead for good at 42-41 with 8:57 to play. After a Donnelly three, Army fought back within two at 47-45, but freshman Asia Wilson sank a triple to stretch it back to a five-point lead.
- The Black Knights were unable to get any closer than five the rest of the way and did not score again following a three from Brooke Wilson with 4:01 remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Donnelly set a new career-high with the four three-pointers in the victory.
- Flanagan matched her season-high with six rebounds and also added four assists as she now has 491 in her career.
- The Crusaders shot 50.0% (25-of-50) from the floor and 44.4% (8-of-18) from beyond the arc on the day, while limiting Army to 33.3% (19-of-57) from the field and 27.3% (6-of-22) from long range.
- Army was held under 50 points for just the second time this season.
- Donnelly paced Holy Cross with eight rebounds and the Black Knights held a slight 35-34 edge in the overall rebounding battle.
- After recording a career-high six steals on Wednesday, Eddy added three more thefts and has now registered five straight games with multiple steals.
