EASTON, Pa. – The Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated on the road by Patriot League foe Lafayette 74-55 Saturday afternoon in the Kirby Sports Center.
Sophomore guard
Tyler Boston scored a team-high 18 points in the loss for the Crusaders (8-11, 3-3 PL) on 58.3 percent (7-of-12) shooting while junior guard/forward
Joe Nugent dropped 16 points, corralled a team-best four rebounds and had two steals in 32 minutes of action.
For Lafayette (5-14, 2-4 PL), Andrew Phillips posted a contest-high 19 points on 66.7 percent (8-of-12) shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lafayette took a 9-3 advantage a few minutes following the first media stoppage. Nugent pump faked and drew contact for the hoop and harm putting Holy Cross down 9-6 with 12:48 left in the stanza. The Leopards strung together 10 straight to open a double digit 19-6 edge with 10:13 to go before the break.
- Boston halted a 4:25 scoreless stretch via a mid-range jumper trimming the Leopard lead to 19-8. The host scoring binge expanded to 16-2 as the advantage grew to 25-8 with seven minutes on the clock. A Leopard three-pointer upped the margin to 20, 30-10 at the 6:04 mark. Down 21, Boston was fouled on a three-ball attempt, he sank the jumper and the free throw to trail 33-16. Boston's four point play was the start of a 15-4 Crusader run as Nugent drilled a trailer three, Boston hit another in transition and junior guard John St. Germain III connected on a trey from the left corner as Holy Cross was down 37-27 at the intermission.
- Freshman forward Aiden Disu was fouled on the first possession of the new half for the Crusaders and hit both at the stripe dropping the deficit to eight, 37-29. Back-to-back threes from the Leopards regained a double-digit lead at 50-35 with 15:18 to go. Boston canned a mid-range jumper to bring the margin back to nine, 50-41.
- After the under 12 media stoppage, the Leopards used an 18-5 run to regain control of the game and reestablish a 20+ point lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross recorded 12 or fewer turnovers in their 11th straight game.
- Lafayette secured 45 rebounds which was an opponent high against the Crusaders this year.
