Emma Sorensen posted double-double efforts each as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell by a 3-2 score to Patriot League opponent Bucknell Friday evening in Blaney Gymnasium.
The loss was the 11th of the season for the Crusaders and the third in league action. Bucknell moves to 6-6 and 3-0 in conference play with the victory.
Wold recorded a new career-high with a contest-best 18 kills to go with her 11 digs in the eighth double-double effort of her career. It was also the second time this season she had 4+ aces (4). Sorensen's 17 kill and 12 dig showing was the fifth time she had double-digit kills and digs in a match.
SET SCORES:
Bison 3, Crusaders 2 (25-23, 24-26, 25-15, 5-25, 9-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- A freshman middle blocker Kyla Harris mash from the middle coupled with a Bucknell error tied the match 4-4. Senior setter Katie Russell placed an ace to again tie the score 7-7. Trailing 9-7, Holy Cross strung together five in a row with two Sorensen kills as well as a Wold kill and ace to lead 12-9. Holy Cross had a one point, 15-14 edge at the media timeout. Down one, back-to-back Wold kills with Russell's second ace of the set regained the edge to the Crusaders 20-19. Holy Cross gained a two-point margin following the Harris and Sorensen block at the left pin at 24-22. Harris clinched the set for the 25-23 Crusader win.
- Bucknell led 5-1 early in the second set. Holy Cross used a 9-2 burst to take their first lead 11-8 as Harris and Wold had a pair of kills in the run. Two Bucknell attack errors moved the advantage to 17-11 Holy Cross. The Bison came within two, but junior outside hitter Taliah Lee put the ball away on each pin over the next two serves to lead 21-17. The Bison had a 7-1 burst to reach set point 24-22. Holy Cross tied the set with a Wold kill and Bison attack error. Bucknell took the set 26-24.
- Wold dropped home two straight aces making it 12-8 Holy Cross in the third set. Freshman setter/right side KK Green converted a Russell set on the right side for the 15-10 margin at the media stoppage. Harris notched another Holy Cross ace for the 19-14 advantage late in the set. Holding a three point lead 17-14, Holy Cross outscored Bucknell 8-1 with Russell clinching the set via an ace.
- With the match on the line, Bucknell came out firing in the fourth set jumping ahead 12-2 early. The Bison never looked back sending the match the distance.
- Sorensen scored first points for Holy Cross in the fifth set to trail 4-2. A solo Bison block doubled up the score 6-3. Bucknell held a 12-5 edge and Holy Cross scored three straight to come within four, 12-8. Bucknell ended up taking the match in the fifth set.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Holy Cross had 17 kills and hit .308 in the opening set while Bucknell hit .529 in the fourth set.
- This was the fourth time this season the Crusaders had 10+ aces in a match (13).
- Freshman defensive specialist Savannah Baron tallied a career-high 12 digs in the match.
- Holy Cross has played six five set matches this year and has a 3-3 record in those games.
