Volleyball sweeps Stonehill in home opener Wednesday night

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Emma Sorensen and junior Taliah Lee posted double-digit kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory against nonconference opponent Stonehill Wednesday night during their home opener in the Hart Center Arena.

The win sends the Crusaders to 4-7 on the season. With the loss, the Skyhawks slide to 1-10.

Sorensen paced all players with a game-best 11 kills hitting .579 recording eight digs, two shy of a double-double. Lee had 10 kills and hit .400 with a block and a dig. Sophomore defensive specialist Alana Whitwell established a new career-high with 20 digs to go with a personal-best five assists.

SET SCORES:
Crusaders 3, Skyhawks 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Tied 8-8 a Lee kill and a pair of aces from sophomore outside hitter Gabby Wold regained the lead towards Holy Cross at 11-8. Senior Katie Russell set up Lee for a kill which led to a Skyhawk timeout. Wold came up with a huge solo stuff on the outside increasing the Crusader lead to 18-12. Freshman middle blocker Isa Glover stopped an attack attempt in the middle pushing the score to 21-15. Freshman setter/right side KK Green powered through a block to clinch the set.
  • Trailing 4-1 early, Holy Cross accumulated a 7-2 stretch getting a pair of freshman middle blocker Kyla Harris kills to lead 8-6. Four straight put the Skyhawks back ahead by one, 11-10, however Holy Cross scored five straight points getting blocks from Lee, Wold and Glover. Stonehill trimmed their margin to two, 22-20, but Green converted a set from the right side making it 23-21. Sorensen gave the Crusaders a 2-0 match with the final point.
  • Holy Cross eventually led 8-3 in the third set. Glover's second kill of the match doubled up the score at 10-5 Holy Cross. A Whitwell ace expanded the advantage to 18-8. The Crusaders won the set 25-12.
