Holy Cross falls to Bucknell in doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Bucknell on Alumnae/90-Wide Day on Saturday, May 3.

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 0, BISON 1 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 2-17), 7.0 innings pitched, 3 hits allowed, 1 run,  1 earned, 4 strikeouts.
  • Bucknell: Savannah Jones (W, 8-8), 7.0 innings pitched, 4 hits allowed, 0 runs,  2 strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman Jordan Goedel and Bucknell's Savannah Jones kept the game scoreless through the first three innings.
  • Despite a close diving attempt from Holy Cross left fielder Jena Whipple, center fielder Haley Speicher doubled to lead off the fourth inning. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a base hit from Jones to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
  • The Crusaders secured a pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth inning but were unable to score in the frame. Jones then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the complete-game shutout.

GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 0, BISON 4 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 4-17), 7.0 innings pitched, 6 hits allowed, 4 runs, 1 earned, 3 strikeouts.
  • Bucknell: Madison Roukey (W, 6-16), 7.0 innings pitched, 5 hits allowed, 0 runs, 3 strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two scoreless innings, Bucknell struck first in the top of the third after an error and a hit batter put two runners on. A single to center then drove home the first run of the contest.
  • The Bison added another unearned run in the fourth, and had two runs in the fifth — including a leadoff solo homer — to build a 4-0 advantage.
  • Holy Cross put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single by Caroline Higgins and a walk by Silje Emery, but a fielder's choice and pair of groundouts kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, May 4 for the final game of the regular season with Bucknell for Senior Day at Freshman Field.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
