WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team hosted UMass-Lowell for a midweek non-conference doubleheader on Apr. 9. The Riverhawks took the series sweep over the Crusaders, 3-0 in game one and 10-2 in game two.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 0, RIVERHAWKS 3 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 3-13), 7.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three runs, three earned, seven strikeouts.
- UMass-Lowell: Olivia Decitise (W, 5-6), 7.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, five strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Callie Thibault: 1-for-3, one double.
- Avery Spinello-Branch: 1-for-3, two RBIs.
- Madi Wade: 1-for-3, one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Riverhawks scored first on a Madi Wade RBI single to center field in the top of the second to score her teammate from second.
- UMass-Lowell drove in another run on an Avery Spinello-Branch two-RBI single to center field for the 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh. The Crusaders stranded one runner on in the bottom of the inning for the Riverhawks to take game one 3-0.
GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 2, RIVERHAWKS 10 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.1 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs, four earned.
- UMass-Lowell: Giana Lacedra (W, 3-8), 6.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, one run, one earned, two strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (L, 1-10), 4.2 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, five runs, none earned, three strikeouts.
- UMass-Lowell: Jen Slanovec, 1.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, one earned.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Anna Brait: 1-for-3, one double, one RBI.
- Jordan Goedel: 2-for-4, one RBI.
- Emily Tow: 2-for-4, one double, two runs scored, three RBIs.
- Madi Wade: 1-for-4, one triple, two RBIs.
- Avery Spinello-Branch: 4-for-5, two runs scored, one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Riverhawks scored one run on a passed ball and a second run on an RBI ground out by Katelyn Fitzgerald for the 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
- In the top of the third, UMass-Lowell extended its lead on an Emily Tow two-RBI double to left center and on a Wade RBI ground out. The Crusaders battled back in the bottom of the inning with junior Anna Brait driving in freshman Silje Emery on an RBI double for the 5-1 result.
- UMass-Lowell tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on a Tow RBI single to right center and a Wade RBI triple down the right line.
- In the top of the seventh, the Riverhawks scored three runs on a Callie Stubbs RBI ground out, an Emily Baumes RBI double to right center and a Spinello-Branch RBI single to the shortstop. Holy Cross managed one more run on an RBI single through the left side by freshman Jordan Goedel to drive home senior captain Callie Thibault. UMass-Lowell prevailed 10-2 over the Crusaders to take the series sweep.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 when they travel to West Point, N.Y. for a Patriot League doubleheader with Army at the Army West Point Softball Complex.
- First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
